Cathmawr is a small cattery in Swansea, South Wales.  My first introduction to Maine Coons was over six years ago now, when, having just lost a faithful friend of 19 years, my partner suggested we consider giving a home to a 15 month old Maine Coon who needed rehoming.

Rozeecoonz Hiawatha, our first Maine Coon, came to us when he was 15 months old.

I  went  to see  'Tiny'  who was back with his breeders in Carmarthen,   and fell in love with him.  He is a magnificent neuter boy for whom Tiny is a wonderful name.

His breeders, Rose and Eddie Kitching, persuaded us that he would gain his first certificate if I took him to a forthcoming show, and, sure enough, he did.  We have not looked back.

About this time Rose and Eddie had two litters of kittens and we decided that we would like to have one of the girls and breed from her.  On my many visits to Carmarthen to see our new girl, I fell in love with the only boy and he also came home with us.

Our main priority is to breed kittens with good pedigrees and great temperaments.  All the cats live with us in the house and have 24  hour access to an outdoor run.  With the exception of our escape artist, Al, they also have access to the other part of the garden.  The kittens are born in the house and spend the first weeks of their lives upstairs in our bedroom with their mum.  As they get more adventurous they gradually venture downstairs and meet the other cats, until, at about six week, everyone is together and the kittens love to cuddle up to their big fluffy 'uncles'.  The neuter boys really do love the kittens and will help with the washing and grooming.  All the kittens are fully vaccinated, micro-chipped, insured for 4 weeks, wormed and flea-treated before they leave home at 13 weeks.

Our boys and girls are all registered with FIFe (Federation Internationale Feline) or GCCF (General Council for the Cat Fancy) and I have shown them on a regular basis.   We have made good friends through the show circuit and the Aristocats Club, the affiliated club to which we belong.  Special thanks go to Rose and Eddie Kitching of Rozeecoonz Maine Coons, now living in Ludchurch, Pembrokeshire, for introducing us to these majestic cats.

Retirement of a sort was unexpectedly forced on me at the end of 2004 so I was able to spend a lot of time with our first litter of kittens..  It was great fun and a privilege to see them develop from new borns into boisterous, energetic little cats, each with his or her own personality and character.  We absolutely adored them all and the first thing we would say to each other if one of us had been out was "How are the kittens."

In July 2007 Violet, one of the girls from our first litter had her own kittens and we kept Alys to be a future breeding girl.  The following year Violet had a single kitten, Princess Xena. Being on her own "The Princess" had all the attention for herself and I knew from very early on that we would never part with her.  She is now the ultimate spoilt princess with kittens of her own
